Chapter 25
Abraham took another woman, and her name was Keturah.
She had children with him: Zimran, Jokshan, Medan, Midian, Ishbak, and Shuah.
Jokshan fathered Sheba and Dedan. And the descendants of Dedan were the Asshurites, Letushites, and Leummites.
The sons of Midian were Ephah, Epher, Hanoch, Abida, and Eldaah. All these were the descendants of Keturah.
Now Abraham gave everything he owned directly to Isaac.
But while he was still living, Abraham gave gifts to the sons of his concubines; then he sent them away from his son Isaac, eastward to the land of the East.
This is the full lifespan of Abraham: 175 years.
Then Abraham breathed his last and died at a ripe old age, an old man who had lived a full life; and he was gathered to his ancestors.
His sons Isaac and Ishmael buried him in the cave of Machpelah, in the field of Ephron the son of Zohar the Hittite, near Mamre—
the exact field that Abraham had purchased from the sons of Heth. There Abraham was buried along with his woman Sarah.
And it came to pass after the death of Abraham, that The All-Powerful One endowed his son Isaac with the power of life; and Isaac lived near Beer-lahai-roi (The Well of the Living One Who Sees Me).
Now this is the family record of Ishmael, Abraham’s son, whom Hagar the Egyptian, Sarah’s maidservant, had with Abraham.
These are the names of the sons of Ishmael, listed by their names according to their lineage: Nebaioth, the firstborn of Ishmael, then Kedar, Adbeel, Mibsam,
Mishma, Dumah, Massa,
Hadad, Tema, Jetur, Naphish, and Kedemah.
These are the sons of Ishmael and these are their names, by their settlements and by their nomadic camps—12 chieftains according to their clans.
This is the full lifespan of Ishmael: 137 years. Then he breathed his last and died, and he was gathered to his ancestors.
His descendants settled from Havilah to Shur, which is opposite Egypt as you go toward Assyria. He settled right alongside all his relatives.
Now this is the family record of Isaac, Abraham’s son: Abraham fathered Isaac.
Isaac was 40 years old when he took Rebekah as his woman; she was the daughter of Bethuel the Aramean from Paddan-aram and the sister of Laban the Aramean.
Isaac interceded with The Self-Existent on behalf of his woman because she was barren. The Self-Existent granted his plea, and his woman Rebekah became pregnant.
But the children struggled together inside her, and she said, “If it is like this, why am I living?” So she went to inquire of The Self-Existent.
The Self-Existent said to her:
“Two nations are in your womb,
and two peoples shall be separated from within you;
one people shall be stronger than the other,
and the older shall serve the younger.”
When her time to give birth arrived, Look, there were twins in her womb.
The first came out reddish, his whole body covered like a hairy cloak; so they named him Esau (Hairy).
After that, his brother came out with his hand grasping Esau’s heel; so they named him Jacob (Heel-Grasper). Isaac was 60 years old when she had them.
When the young men grew up, Esau became an expert hunter, a man of the open field, while Jacob was an unwavering man, staying among the tents.
Isaac loved Esau because he had a taste for wild game, but Rebekah loved Jacob.
Once, when Jacob was cooking a stew, Esau came in from the open field, and he was completely exhausted.
Esau said to Jacob, “Please let me gulp down some of that red stuff—that red stuff right there—for I am completely exhausted.” (Therefore his name was called Edom [Red]).
Jacob replied, “Sell me your birthright this very day”.
Esau said, “Look, I am about to die; of what use is a birthright to me?”.
Jacob insisted, “Swear an oath to me this very day.” So he swore an oath to him and sold his birthright directly to Jacob.
Then Jacob gave Esau bread and lentil stew; he ate and drank, got up, and left. Therefore, Esau cared nothing for his birthright.
