Now Joseph had been brought down to Egypt; and Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh, captain of the guard, an Egyptian man, purchased him from the Ishmaelites who had brought him down there.
And The Self-Existent was with Joseph, and he became a successful man; and he lived in the house of his master, the Egyptian.
His master saw that The Self-Existent was with him, and that The Self-Existent caused everything he did to prosper.
So Joseph found favor in his eyes and became his personal attendant; Potiphar appointed him supervisor over his house and put him in charge of everything he owned.
Now it came to pass from the time he appointed him supervisor over his house and over all that he owned, that The Self-Existent endowed the house of the Egyptian with the power of life for Joseph’s sake; and the life-force of The Self-Existent was upon everything he owned, both in the house and in the field.
So Potiphar left everything he owned under Joseph's care; with Joseph there, he didn't concern himself with anything except the food he ate. Now Joseph was exceptionally beautiful in form and appearance.
Now it came to pass after these things that his master’s woman fixated on Joseph and said, “Lie with me.”
But he refused and said to his master’s woman, “Look! With me here, my master doesn't concern himself with anything in the house, and he has put me in charge of everything he owned.
No one has more authority in this house than I do, and he has withheld nothing from me except you, because you are his woman. How could I do such a terribly harmful thing and sin against The All-Powerful One?”
And it came to pass, as she spoke to Joseph day after day, that he refused to listen to her to lie beside her or even be near her.
Now it came to pass on a certain day that he went into the house to do his work, and none of the men of the household were inside.
She caught him by his garment, saying, “Lie with me!” But he left his garment in her hand, fled, and ran outside.
When she saw that he had left his garment in her hand and had fled outside,
she called out to the men of her household and spoke directly to them, saying, “Look! He brought a Hebrew man to us to make a mockery of us. He came in to me to lie with me, but I screamed as loud as I could.
And when he heard me raise my voice and scream, he left his garment beside me, fled, and ran outside.”
She kept his garment beside her until his master came home.
Then she told him the exact same story, saying, “The Hebrew servant whom you brought to us came in to me to make a mockery of me.
But when I raised my voice and screamed, he left his garment beside me and fled outside.”
When his master heard the words of his woman, which she spoke directly to him, saying, “This is exactly how your servant treated me,” his anger blazed hot.
So Joseph’s master took him and threw him into the prison house, the place where the king’s prisoners were confined; and he remained there in the prison house.
But The Self-Existent was with Joseph; He remained true to His promise to him and granted him favor in the eyes of the prison warden.
The prison warden put Joseph in charge of all the prisoners who were in the prison house; he became the one responsible for everything they did there.
The warden did not concern himself with anything under Joseph’s care, because The Self-Existent was with him; and whatever Joseph did, The Self-Existent caused it to prosper.
